The majority of my career was spent as an art director and graphic designer but I have a passion for drawing. It's having my hand in the work...the human element is soul of art itself. There's a craftsmanship involved when creating a piece with your hands that I value and respect. My drawings in pen and ink and pencils focus on themes revolving around the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwestern Virginia where I was born and never left. It's a wonderful and awe-filled landscape that becomes a part of who you are. My detailed stipple drawings in pen and ink involve applying individual dots of ink, one at a time, with a fine point technical drawing pen. The dots are used then to create the values and areas of shading in the drawing. My work is inspired by a beautiful scenic river one day, or something much more mundane like an rusty old truck the next. In the end, the technique requires many hours of drawing time, many of my drawings take 40 hours or more to complete but the technique creates a wonderful texture and allows me to capture subtle details, textures, and contrasts. I hope my work will afford the viewer an opportunity for a nostalgic "inner grin" and moment of wonder at the complexity of the technique itself.
Me in my first storefront studio in Roanoke, Virginia circa 1992. After spending several years in print production, I took the leap into creative and struck out on my own as
Paul Stump Illustration, Inc. At that time I was primarily doing a technical style of digital product illustration for Advance Auto Parts and others. I also offered graphic design services to a varied list of companies.
As Paul Stump Illustration, I was fortunate to have received recognition from other advertising professionals including a "Best in Show" and as the first recipient of the "Mosaic Award" in 2005. My work was recognized in several categories including Industry Self-Promotion, Illustration, and Logo Design.
My pen and ink drawing "Misty Morning Mood" garnered a blue ribbon in its category that also included photography and mixed media. This being my first, "first place", it was also my first entry into a competition style art show. I'm humbled that the judges chose my work over so many other great pieces in the show.
