I've spent the majority of my journey as an artist working digitally as an art director and graphic designer and illustrator but never lost the passion for how it all started...drawing. Having your hand in the work is how any creative endeavor is imbued with it's own soul. The craftsmanship involved in creating a drawing with your hands has always held my imagination and respect for those that can do it well. My drawings in pen and ink and pencils focus on whatever interests me but on the whole my drawings are inspired by the people, places and things that surround our every day lives. In my case, the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia . Most are detailed stipple drawings in pen and ink and involve applying individual dots of ink with a very fine point drawing pen. The dots are used then to create the values and areas of shading in the drawing. The technique requires many hours of drawing time but the end result for me is worth the effort. This technique creates a unique texture and allows for capturing subtle details, textures, and contrasts that can't be achieved in the same way as traditional hatching techniques. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and check out my work. I hope it feels familiar and triggers fond memories from a simpler time.
Me in my first storefront studio in Roanoke, Virginia circa 1992. After spending several years in print production, I took the leap into creative and struck out on my own as
Paul Stump Illustration, Inc. At that time I was primarily doing a technical style of digital product illustration for Advance Auto Parts and others. I also offered graphic design services to a varied list of companies.
As Paul Stump Illustration, I was fortunate to have received recognition from other advertising professionals including a "Best in Show" and as the first recipient of the "Mosaic Award" in 2005. My work was recognized in several categories including Industry Self-Promotion, Illustration, and Logo Design.
My pen and ink drawing "Misty Morning Mood" garnered a blue ribbon in its category that also included photography and mixed media. This being my first, "first place", it was also my first entry into a competition style art show. I'm humbled that the judges chose my work over so many other great pieces in the show.
